Legal Requirements for Car Sales in Arizona

- First, you need to sign the car’s title (on the back) and get it notarized.
- Give the title to the buyer. Make sure not to give the buyer the title until after they pay for the car. Otherwise, they will legally own the car and you might never get paid!
- Next, if applicable, give the buyer a lien release.
- Remove the license plate from your car. You can either destroy it or contact the AZ MVD to transfer it to another of your vehicles. Or keep it and hang it on your wall! When you sell a car, you keep the license plate so you can choose what you want to do with it. Just make sure not to leave the plates on when you give the car to the new owner.
- Go online and fill in a Sold Notice on the AZ MVD Now Website.
- Lastly, apply for a Registration Credit. (You have 30 days after the sale to do this, just FYI.) And that’s all it takes to sell a car in Arizona!
