Cleaning (and cleaning out) your car before selling it is a great way to get more money for it. Plus, you’ll be sure to take anything that’s not part of the car. Clothes, for example, and tools, kids’ toys, car accessories, etc.

Where to Sell Your Car

For many folks, figuring out the best method to sell their car is the most challenging part. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated! There are many ways to sell a car in Arizona today, and most are easy and inexpensive.

To make it super easy for you, we made a list of the best ways to sell a car:

  • Put a “For Sale” sign on your car. You can park your car in your driveway or along a busy road where lots of people will drive past it. This is an easy and affordable way to sell your car and the sunny weather in Arizona makes it even easier. You need to put a sign in your car window that has a price and your phone number. And hopefully, you will get lots of calls from interested buyers! You can also put up “Car For Sale” signs around your neighborhood to spread the word even more.
  • Another option is to use an Autotrader. An Autotrader is a service that costs between $25 and $90. This option offers the most features and options.
  • You can also choose to sell your car through eBay Motors. This is a safe and secure way to sell, but fees can be a bit pricey.
  • If you’re looking for a free way to sell your car online you can try Facebook Marketplace. This is not the best option for selling a car because you don’t have the security of an online car vendor. But many people do sell their cars this way.
  • Similarly, you can sell your car online using Craigslist but you need to be careful to avoid scammers. This is most like a classified ad.

If you plan to use an online car sales platform here are some options:

  • CarGurus: Excellent support and seller tools available.
  • Cars.com: The best place to sell your car quickly.
  • Carvana: They buy your car and, if you like, will sell you a new one too.

Clean Your Car Thoroughly Before Selling

Cleaning (and cleaning out) your car before selling it is a great way to get more money for it. Plus, you’ll be sure to take anything that’s not part of the car. Clothes, for example, and tools, kids’ toys, car accessories, etc.

Selling a car in Arizona isn’t difficult, but you need to follow a few rules and regulations. The last thing you want is legal trouble! Once you’ve found a buyer for your car, you will need to follow these steps.

  1. First, you need to sign the car’s title (on the back) and get it notarized.
  2. Give the title to the buyer. Make sure not to give the buyer the title until after they pay for the car. Otherwise, they will legally own the car and you might never get paid!
  3. Next, if applicable, give the buyer a lien release.
  4. Remove the license plate from your car. You can either destroy it or contact the AZ MVD to transfer it to another of your vehicles. Or keep it and hang it on your wall! When you sell a car, you keep the license plate so you can choose what you want to do with it. Just make sure not to leave the plates on when you give the car to the new owner.
  5. Go online and fill in a Sold Notice on the AZ MVD Now Website.
  6. Lastly, apply for a Registration Credit. (You have 30 days after the sale to do this, just FYI.) And that’s all it takes to sell a car in Arizona!
TIP: In Arizona, you can transfer your car’s title online. Not only is it more convenient for you, but it’s also more secure.

Don’t Forget the Odometer Disclosure

If the car you’re selling is less than 10 years old, you must make an Odometer Disclosure. This is a federally required step to accurately read your car’s odometer (aka its mileage).

The Sold Notice is Very Important

We talked about the Sold Notice above, but it’s important enough to go over again. To sell a car in Arizona you need to fill out a Sold Notice when your car sells. Not only that, but the Sold Notice protects you from liability if the vehicle you sold is:

  • Used in some type of criminal activity.
  • Involved in any type of accident.
  • Ticketed by the police for any reason.
  • Abandoned.
